Who are we?
At The Learning Canopy, our team are experienced, qualified professionals who are passionate about supporting children in a way that is both meaningful and effective.
We have built staff training into our weekly structure. Rather than holding inset days throughout the year we dedicate a day each week to professional development. During this time, staff review current pupils, share insight as a team, and develop approaches that are directly relevant to the children we are supporting. Training is shaped by real need and reflects the children in our care. Alongside this, staff engage with current research, case studies, online learning and in person training, as well as core areas such as safeguarding and first aid.
This ensures that our practice is continually developing, informed, and closely aligned with the needs of the children we support.
Jemma is the founder of The Learning Canopy.
She holds a degree in Education and Early Years from Cardiff Metropolitan University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, and a Master’s degree in Additional Learning Needs from Swansea University, which she completed while teaching. Her postgraduate research focused on the impact of low attainment on children’s self-esteem, and included published case studies.
Jemma began her career in Montessori education, an experience that continues to shape and underpin her teaching philosophy. This foundation is reflected in her belief in hands-on, child-led learning and the importance of developing confidence alongside academic skills.
Prior to this, Jemma worked in private nurseries before completing her undergraduate degree, during which she took part in a placement in Romania working in orphanages. This experience strengthened her understanding of how to support and teach children without relying solely on language and further deepened her connection to the Montessori ethos.
Jemma later worked as a classroom teacher for a number of years, supporting children with a wide range of needs while continuing to develop her practice through ongoing professional development. Alongside teaching, she completed her Master’s degree in Additional Learning Needs.
She has been invited to speak alongside Graham Donaldson, sharing her work on how Montessori approaches can align with the new curriculum and what this means for children with additional learning needs. She has also contributed as a panel expert in ALN discussions.
Through The Learning Canopy, Jemma has created a calm, supportive environment where learning is tailored to each child. She works closely with families to ensure every child feels understood, capable and able to succeed in a way that works for them.
Karen is a highly experienced member of staff with over 20 years of experience working in schools, supporting children across a wide range of ages and abilities.
She has a strong background in delivering targeted interventions in literacy and numeracy, alongside supporting children with additional learning needs and emotional wellbeing. Her experience in the classroom has given her a deep understanding of how to adapt learning so it feels accessible, engaging and achievable for every child.
At The Learning Canopy, Karen plays a key role in delivering both small group and 1:1 sessions. She has developed and leads our handwriting intervention Roots and stems. This pathway supports children to develop fine motor skills, letter formation and confidence in their written work through structured, carefully planned approaches.
Karen is also an integral part of our Bloom and Believe pathway, where she supports children in building confidence, self-esteem and emotional resilience. Her calm, nurturing approach allows children to feel safe and understood, creating the foundations for both personal and academic growth.
Cath is a qualified teacher with a strong focus on early learning. Her expertise in these foundational stages means she is particularly skilled at supporting older learners who may have gaps in their early literacy and numeracy development.
She brings a clear, structured approach to teaching, helping children to revisit and secure key skills in a way that feels manageable and confidence-building. Cath has a strong understanding of how to break learning down into achievable steps, ensuring that children feel successful as they rebuild these core foundations.
At The Learning Canopy, Cath plays a key role in delivering our Numeracy Nest pathway, as well as supporting Spelling Saplings and Reading Roots. Her sessions focus on strengthening core skills, developing understanding and helping children to make meaningful progress from their starting point.
In addition to her teaching role, Cath supports the wider organisation of TLC, contributing to planning, preparation and ensuring that sessions run smoothly. Her thoughtful and consistent approach helps to create a calm, well-structured environment where children feel supported and ready to learn.
