Reading Roots

A structured literacy pathway designed to support early reading development through a clear and carefully sequenced approach.

Reading Roots focuses on building strong foundations in phonics, decoding and word recognition, while also developing fluency and early comprehension skills. Sessions are adapted to each child’s level, ensuring that learning feels achievable and confidence can grow alongside ability.

We use a combination of structured teaching, repetition and engaging, meaningful content to help children secure key skills and apply them with increasing independence. Alongside decoding, we place a strong emphasis on understanding, vocabulary development and helping children make sense of what they are reading.

This pathway is particularly beneficial for children who are at the early stages of reading, those who may be finding reading challenging, or learners with dyslexic profiles who benefit from a more structured, supportive approach. It is also well suited to older learners who need to revisit and strengthen foundational literacy skills.

Reading Roots supports wider literacy development, providing the building blocks needed for spelling, writing and comprehension. Our aim is to develop confident, capable readers who feel positive about reading and ready to progress across all areas of learning.

Case Study

One of our learners joined The Learning Canopy in Summer 2025 with a reading age of 4 years and 8 months, following two years of minimal progress.

With just one session per week, we began rebuilding foundations through our Reading Roots pathway, closely monitoring her development within sessions. By January things really started to click. We saw consistent progress, with gaps closing week by week and reading age increasing by months within just a few weeks.

This progress was later confirmed during a March parents’ evening, where school also recognised the change and reassessed her reading age to ensure accuracy. Her reading age increased to 8 years and 2 months. Showing a gain of 42 months since her last assessment.

This reflects the impact of targeted, personalised support that focuses on understanding, confidence and secure foundations.
