Numeracy Nest

A structured maths pathway designed to support children in developing confidence, understanding and fluency in number.

Within Numeracy Nest, children progress through three stages, each represented by a bird within the nest. These stages reflect growing confidence, independence and understanding, while allowing every child to move at their own pace.

🐦 Wren

The wren represents the early stages of learning. Small, curious and active, this stage focuses on building secure foundations in number.

Children are supported through overlearning of key concepts, including addition, subtraction and patterns. There is a strong focus on developing number sense and understanding place value up to 20.

Learning is practical and hands-on, allowing children to explore concepts in a meaningful way. Repetition and consistency help children to build confidence and familiarity, creating a strong base for future learning.

🐦 Robin

The robin represents growing confidence and expanding understanding. At this stage, children begin to build on their foundations and apply their skills more independently.

Learning moves into number up to 100, introducing early multiplication, column methods and a wider range of mathematical concepts, including fractions. Sessions also focus on areas that children may be finding challenging within school.

Through working closely with schools, or using our own assessments, we are able to identify key gaps in learning and provide targeted support to address them. This ensures that children are not just keeping up, but truly understanding the maths they are learning.

🐦 Owl

The owl represents deeper thinking and increasing independence. At this stage, children focus on developing confidence across all four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, while ensuring that any remaining gaps are carefully addressed.

Learning moves into more complex problem solving, including worded problems, where children are supported to apply their knowledge in context. We place importance on understanding the reasoning behind written methods, rather than simply going through the motions.

Although learning becomes more advanced, sessions remain practical, supportive and fully tailored to the individual. This ensures that children continue to feel confident in their approach and secure in their understanding.

🌿 Progress through the nest is not fixed or time-based. Each child’s journey is unique, and their learning is carefully adapted to ensure they feel supported, confident and able to grow at their own pace.
