Canopy Connection

A specialist pathway designed to support children experiencing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA), providing a calm, understanding and responsive approach to re-engaging with learning.

We recognise that EBSA is not about refusal, but about underlying anxiety, overwhelm and unmet needs. This pathway prioritises emotional safety, trust and connection, allowing children to begin rebuilding their relationship with learning at their own pace.

Sessions are carefully adapted to meet each child where they are. For some, this may begin with short, low-demand interactions focused on building comfort and familiarity. For others, it may involve gradually reintroducing structured learning in a way that feels manageable and supported. There is no fixed expectation or timeline.

A strong emphasis is placed on reducing anxiety and creating a predictable, safe environment. Children are supported to feel in control of their experience, helping to rebuild confidence, independence and a sense of capability.

As trust develops, sessions may begin to incorporate elements of other TLC pathways, allowing learning to be reintroduced naturally and without pressure. This ensures that progress feels achievable, rather than overwhelming.

We work closely with families and, where appropriate, schools and other professionals to provide consistent, joined-up support. This may include contributing to plans, supporting transitions or helping to identify appropriate next steps for each child.

The aim of the EBSA Pathway is not simply to return children to education, but to help them feel safe, confident and able to engage again in a way that is sustainable and meaningful for them.
